mobileZIPcodes

Look up ZIP codes on your iPhone or iPod touch

Translations: I’m looking for some people who could help me translating ZIPcodes.app to other languages than English – if you’re willing to spend a few minutes translating some phrases please send me a short message! Thx!!

Overview

mobileZIPcodes is a small tool that allows you to browse ZIP codes and the corresponding city/state/district/country data on your iPhone or iPod touch.
As you don’t require to be online while looking up the ZIP code information, it is in particular useful for iPod touch users without the ability to use EDGE on the way.

Wonderful app! Canada would be a most useful addition to me… I wonder if you might be planning on adding it?
I noted you quoted geocoder.ibegin.com as your source for the US zip codes, I checked that site and it appears one can access Canadian postal codes there as well.

Hi! Yes, I’ve found that too, but the problem is, the whole Canadian ZIP codes database would be around 56 MB, which would be too large for download and would overstrain the iPhone while browsing or searching – so I have to find a way how I can shrink the data to an acceptable size without loosing too much information.

  18. Andi Says:

@jowell and kvyanh: pls have a look at my comment about data and providing possible sources! Thx!

Thanks for your reply re: the Canadian postal codes.

Just a thought… would it be possible to perhaps break the database into 2 parts? Maybe Western Canada and Eastern Canada? Just wondered if that might help with the size… if one loaded both it would still amount to the same 59mb, however I noticed that a couple of the dictionary modules I have for weDict are approx 24mb and 29mb respectively as well and it all seems to work.

I’m using this on an iPod Touch 16GB though.

  23. superg3 Says:

  25. roger karman Says:

Like everybody, I find your app and its integration with Maps & Routes one of the best things in iPhone. Apple should offer you good money to build it into their standard software package & develop databases for many other countries, like Brazil. If you need this particular database, let me know.

Sorry, the file had a wrong encoding – should be fixed now.
Please re-install the norway database (delete the old one with the red buttons, save changes, restart and re-install/download norway with the green button).

  37. geircito Says:

I must say: GREAT rapid support!!!!!!

  38. prototype Says:

way if Canada was made into two parts such as western and eastern ??

  39. voxsola Says:

It could even be split into 3 parts:

B.C. to Manitoba – Western Canada
Ontario, Quebec and all other provinces – Eastern Canada
Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut – The Territories

Just a suggestion… I’d be happy to respond with a donation if it could be made to work as I do realize it would mean “extra work”.

  40. Jody Says:

Can you honestly please just basically make a second .app, designed strickly for Canadians? Trust me, we don’t mind downloading a 50MB file… We REALLY want this. Already, I see by reading the comments, there are at least 5 people asking for it – including myself.

Please do us all a favor, and consider basically making a second .app strickly for Canadians.

I don’t understand how the Canadian postal codes can be any larger than USA zip codes…. USA is over 10x the population of Canada… What’s up with that? And postal codes are only one digit/letter longer than zip codes.

Please get back to us about that one. We’d really appreciate it. )

    Thanks

  46. Andreas Linde Says:

    Hi Andi,

bzgl. 1.1.3, bin mal über den Code gegangen, eigentlich müsstest nur die hardcodierten Pfade erstzen:

    [NSHomeDirectory() stringByAppendingPathComponent: @"Media/ZIPCodes"]

Btw, könnte für dich testen, hab meine Applikation (Locations) jetzt auf 1.1.3 laufen, leider lässt sich der Code vom SVN nicht ohne weiteres kompilieren (

  50. Guilherme Eisler Says:

Hi very usefull app. May you search for brazilian zip codes please? I”ll thank you in advance Guilherme

  51. bryce Says:

Awesome app, however it is missing Canada. I know it was been discussed about the size being too large, but after looking at the data set it seem like most of it is just duplicate data. For example from
    T2S 0A1 – T2S 3G2 (555 records) the data is same:

    600707|T2S 0A1|Calgary|Alberta|AB|D|51.018599999999999|-114.0689

    601261|T2S 3G2|Calgary|Alberta|AB|D|51.018599999999999|-114.0689
    ….

I don’t know how the db is implemented, however isn’t it possible to reduce all of the records so that all the postal_code points to the same location in the db?

And by looking at this data file im sure you could trim off most of those 9s at the end of the number.

    And AB = Alberta

As I’ve mentioned some times ago:

I can only provide ZIPcode information I’m able to find or been told by users – and that is free to use and accessible in a acceptable way (no ‘search only’-pages etc.)

So if you like to see any country not included yet – please don’t just ask or demand for it — but give me some information where to find it, and I’ll try to get the permission to include the data into ZIPcodes.

  84. Ian Says:

Hi, I have your app on my Ipod touch, it’s great. Some constructive comments:

I have noticed an anomaly when looking up Australian postcodes:

If I were to lookup: Australia\By Names\Australian Capital Territory\Scullin – I would find that Scullin’s post (ZIP) code is 2614, which is correct.

However, If I were to do the reverse: Australia\By ZIP Codes\26..\2614 – I find this post code is associated with Weetangera – which is also correct, but the app does not cross-reference all those cities/suburbs that share the 2614 code – there are about 5 in total for 2614.

The above situation exists for many other codes that are shared across multiple cities/suburbs.

Perhaps this could be an enhancement in a revised version.

    Regards,

    Ian

  94. David Says:

    Hi
If there is a new update for zipcodes, for information, Swansea UK is in the county of West Glamorgan, not Dyfed as it says in the zipcodes.

    Thanks

  95. Colin Says:
